Admissions Process FAQs
Are entrance tests required for everyone?
Entrance tests are required for all NEW students, though tests vary between grades. Applicants to our ESL program often write additional tests.
Can I talk to current parents or students?
Several of our past and current parents have volunteered to call, email or meet with potential families about their experience with FIS via the PTA.
How long does it take to find out if a student has been accepted?
The entrance test is marked within two days it is finished and depending upon school reports a place can be offered there and then.
Is there an age limit at FIS?
Yes. FIS does not register students who are or will be 19 years of age or over in their graduating year.
When are applications due?
In general, all applications should be submitted before the end of March of the year of entry. For example, if a student was hoping to begin at FIS in September at the start of the new session, their application should be received before April 1st. It is highly recommended to apply earlier, but there are concessions for later applications.
Is there a preference in screening applications?
Pupils who have attended the Funtaj International Primary School will have first preference for places in the Secondary School.
About FIS
Are the teachers qualified and do they have university degrees?
Yes. All of our teaching faculty have university degrees and all hold teaching qualifications. Also, all subjects from JSS1 are taught by subject specialists.
How many students are in a class FIS?
There will be no more than 25 in classes and SS1-3 will be considerably smaller depending upon subject choice.
What is the school’s approach to discipline?
The school is more interested in helping to change thoughtless or irresponsible behaviour than in punishing by suspension or expulsion. There will be severe consequences where warnings go unheeded or where there is a serious breach of school rules. Serious offences include theft, bullying, drugs, smoking and alcohol.
What type of student will succeed at FIS?

What universities will FIS graduates attend?
The vast majority of our graduates attend leading universities within Nigeria, Africa, the US and all over the world.
Boarding FAQs
Am I allowed to bring a laptop to school?
Students in SS can have a personal computer in their boarding residence to assist in their personal research but they must be handed to the House Parents before lights out.
Can boarders stay at the school during the holidays?
Boarding students are expected to return home or travel during breaks of a week or longer. Short one or two days holidays can be spent at school. However, students can arrange homestays with other students and their families.
Can boarders take an extended Christmas or Spring break holiday?
The school provides generous vacation time throughout the year. Students are expected to be present for all academic and examination days. Special permission to be absent during the academic days can only be granted by the Head of the school.
Can I go home on weekends?
No. The weekend Boarding experience is as important as the week days. Special permission is needed to leave for the weekend. Typically, boarders cannot go home the first weekend of the school year and the weekends after longer holidays.
How much money will I need each month?
How much additional money a student will need depends on what they do outside of school hours. Typically, parents set up an allowance through the school that ranges from $5 -10 a week. This is used to cover entertainment as well as off-campus shopping and Tuck Shop money.
What is the accommodation arrangements?
Boys and Girls have separate Boarding Houses which are divided into apartments. Each apartment has 3 bedrooms which have a maximum of 6 in a room with en suite bathroom facilities. There is a dining and recreation area in each of the Houses and there is a live-in House Parent in each.
What do boarders do on weekends?
Almost every weekend, boarding students can partake in an array of activities
When do I find out who my roommates are?
Students meet their roommates when they arrive for school in September.

Neither the application fee nor the registration fee is refundable.
Is there a Scholarship program? How do I apply?
Yes. Applications for Scholarships are made using the appropriate form available from Administration.
What do boarding fees cover?
Boarding fees cover the costs of living in residence, food, house cleaning, House outings, transportation to school events, as well as travel to all-boarders outings.

Student Life FAQs
How do I get involved in extracurricular activities?
All students have the option to join any team, club, or activity. In some cases, there are auditions and tryouts if space is limited. The Secondary School offers over 20 clubs throughout the year and the Primary School has an equal array of Clubs.
If I’m interested in FIS, can I get in touch with a FIS student?
We want our prospective students to have the opportunity to meet with our current students. Our Student Ambassadors are students who have volunteered to welcome all applicants to the school. They can give you a campus tour during your visit or answer your questions through email or webinars. They are also around at receptions and admissions events such as Open House.
